Application of film coating technology in traditional Chinese medicine

Film coating is a novel coating process, refers to the outer core of relatively stable thin film coating polymer. Since the 1930s, research guides on film coating have appeared one after another. However, due to the fact that the conditions of film materials, coating process and equipment are still unable to meet the production requirements, the practical application is limited. In the 1950s, the Abbott Lab produced a new type of film tablet and patented it under the “Filmtab” trademark. After nearly 40 years of research and development, continuous improvement and improvement of production equipment and processes, and the advent of polymer film materials, the film coating technology has developed rapidly, especially in Japan, the film coating technology has developed rapidly. 80% of the tablets were changed to film coating.

The film coating process can be widely used for tablets, pills, granules, and especially for traditional Chinese medicine tablets which are strong in heat absorbing, easy to crack and easy to fade. In the 1990s, film coating technology has developed in the Chinese medicine industry, mainly for film coating of tablets. Compared with sugar coating, film coating has the following advantages:

(1) The time is short (only about 2 hours for a one-pot tablet, and about 16 hours for a sugar-coated tablet), the operation is simple, the drying speed is fast, and the drug is less affected by heat, which is beneficial to improve the quality of the medicine .

(2) The film coating process saves labor (1~2 operators), plant and equipment (only one standard factory and one coating pot), saves materials, so the cost is low, and the initial investment is very limited. .

(3) Tablets applying the film coating process only increase the core weight by 2% to 4%, while sugar-coated tablets (where the main excipients are talc powder that has been eliminated abroad) tend to increase the weight of the core by 50%. ~100%.

(4) The film coating process can reduce the dust flying in the workplace, is conducive to environmental protection and labor protection, and can also save packaging materials.

(5) The mark on the sheet pressed by the film coating process is still clearly visible after the film coating, which is convenient for the patient to distinguish and use.

(6) Film-coated tablets are strong and resistant to cracking; film coating materials have excellent physical properties, and most materials are resistant to moisture and heat, which can improve product quality and extend product life.

(7) Film coatings are available in a wide range of materials. In addition to the general coating purpose, the formed coating film can be dissolved or disintegrated in a certain pH range by selecting a film material and designing a coating prescription; it is also possible to control the permeability of the film. The drugs are released in the body through diffusion, and the purpose of timing and positioning of the drug is achieved. This is an important reason for the widespread development of film coatings.

(8) The production process and material usage can be standardized

Based on the above factors, the sugar-coated tablets have been basically eliminated in the world, and replaced with film-coated tablets, and the process is accelerating in China. At present, the application of traditional Chinese medicine film coating technology is still in its infancy, and domestic Chinese medicine tablets are mainly based on sugar-coated tablets. The market prospect of film coating is very broad, so further research and development and improvement of film coating technology Should be of great concern to us.
