Ophiopogon japonicus

Ophiopogon japonicus, also known as Japanese Mondo Grass, is a newly introduced and highly praised ground cover plant promoted by our country's gardening department. This perennial grass belongs to the Liliaceae family and features lush foliage throughout spring, autumn, and winter, with delicate flowers appearing in summer. Due to its compact size, it is ideal for container planting as well. In traditional medicine, it is valued for its ability to nourish the lungs, relieve coughs, and promote gastric fluids. The plant grows in clusters, with rhizomes at the base and fibrous roots extending downward, along with spindle-shaped roots. Its linear leaves are typically 10 to 15 cm long. The flower stalks emerge from the leaf bases, forming spikelike inflorescences. Each flower is bisexual, with six tepals that start pale purple and gradually turn white as they open. When planted in groups, especially in shaded forest areas, it creates a striking visual display. Flowering occurs between July and August, while fruits develop from September to October. Native to North China, Northwest China, Japan, and Vietnam, Ophiopogon japonicus is known for its cold and drought tolerance. It thrives in semi-shady environments and is not overly particular about soil type. It can grow well in arable land or sandy loam and can even survive winter outdoors in northern regions. Propagation can be done through seeds or cuttings. Seeds are usually sown indoors in spring, and the soil must be thoroughly moistened before planting. Cuttings are best taken in spring or summer. For use as a ground cover, plants should be spaced approximately 10 cm apart. Before planting, the area should be leveled and enriched with organic fertilizer such as manure, chicken droppings, or leech residue. During the active growing season, a balanced compound fertilizer can be applied every two weeks, but care must be taken not to over-fertilize, as this may damage the roots and leaves. After the seeds mature, they should be harvested promptly, dried, and stored in a freezer at 0°C to 5°C to maintain long-term viability.
