Watermelon rind can be an excellent and cost-effective feed for fingerlings due to its high palatability, easy digestion, and nutrient content. There are two common methods for utilizing watermelon rind as fish feed: fresh and dried.
When using fresh watermelon rind, it is typically chopped or beaten with a mixer to break it down into smaller pieces. This mixture is then scattered throughout the pond to feed various aquatic species such as oysters, clams, grass carp, and squid. It is usually fed twice a day, with about 80 to 100 kilograms of rind per acre of water, depending on the water quality. Alternatively, for every thousand fish, 60 to 80 kilograms of watermelon rind can be directly thrown into the pond, allowing the fish to consume the pulp directly. In addition, the rind helps improve water quality by acting as a natural fertilizer, promoting the growth of beneficial microorganisms and plankton that serve as additional food sources for the fish. The key to ensuring that fish can eat the rind effectively is to soften the pulp, making it more digestible.
For the dried method, the watermelon rind is first peeled using a planer, then sun-dried and ground into a fine powder. This powder is then used as a supplement in fish feed. Typically, 2 to 3 kilograms of watermelon rind powder is added per acre of fish pond each day, divided into three feedings. Combining this with other commercial feeds can enhance nutritional balance and improve overall fish health.
