Mao Jasmine

**Jasminum multiflorum – A Fragrant and Versatile Ornamental Plant** Jasminum multiflorum, commonly known as "Hairy Jasmine" or "Chinese Jasmine," is a flowering plant belonging to the genus *Jasminum* within the family *Oleaceae*. Native to India, this species thrives in warm and sunny environments with well-drained, fertile soil. It is not cold-tolerant, so in colder regions, it requires protection indoors during winter, typically in greenhouses. The plant features upright or climbing stems that can grow between 2 to 5 meters tall. Its stems are covered in fine, yellowish-brown hairs. The leaves are opposite, ovate, and have a thin, leathery texture. The flowers appear in umbel-like clusters, are white in color, cup-shaped, and emit a strong, sweet fragrance. Flowering usually occurs from late winter through early spring. After blooming, the plant produces small fruits. Propagation of *Jasminum multiflorum* is most commonly done through cuttings. In spring and summer, one-year-old shoots that are thick and healthy are selected as cuttings. These are planted in a mix of sand and potting soil, and the substrate should be kept consistently moist. Rooting typically takes 20 to 30 days. Cuttings grown using this method tend to establish quickly and develop into well-shaped plants. During the growing season, a balanced fertilizer is applied every 10 days, but fertilization should stop by the start of autumn. In winter, if kept in a greenhouse, it can bloom continuously as long as the temperature remains adequate. In April, the plant is moved outdoors, pruned, repotted, and placed in a shaded area for about 30 days before being returned to regular care. Hairy jasmine is prized for its fragrant, white blossoms that resemble traditional jasmine flowers. It has a long blooming period, making it ideal for indoor decoration, especially during the winter and early spring months when other flowers are scarce. In addition to its ornamental value, *Jasminum multiflorum* holds cultural significance. It is the national flower of Indonesia and the Philippines, symbolizing beauty, purity, and resilience. Whether grown in pots or as a climbing vine, this plant adds both aesthetic appeal and a delightful scent to any space.
