Pay attention to control of corn "invisible" pests - horses

At present, summer-sown maize is in a critical growth phase. Among the key pests affecting corn during the seedling stage, thrips have become increasingly problematic. In recent years, corn thrips infestations have been widespread across our province and are showing a yearly upward trend. Due to their small size—only 1 to 2 mm in length—the adults and nymphs are highly active and often remain hidden, making them difficult to detect. This can lead to missed opportunities for timely control. Additionally, the recent period of low temperatures and low rainfall has created dry conditions that are favorable for thrips development. Corn thrips have entered their peak activity period in mid-July, and it's crucial for farmers to closely monitor their fields to prevent damage. First, the symptoms caused by thrips are important to recognize. Both adult and larval stages are commonly found together in the field, primarily feeding on corn leaves. Infested leaves show irregular silver-gray stripes along the edges, accompanied by small, dark spots. As the corn grows, the damaged leaves may curl or develop a "tail-like" shape, which can result in leaf desiccation and even the death of seedlings. Second, effective control measures should be implemented: 1. During the early seedling stage, it is essential to remove insect pests manually. Farmers should clear manure from outside the field and improve fertilizer and irrigation practices. Weeds around the fields should be removed promptly to reduce the habitat and food source for thrips. 2. For chemical control, apply 10% imidacloprid wettable powder at a rate of 20 grams per acre, or 4.5% beta-cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate at 30–45 ml per acre, mixed with 30 kg of water for spraying. These treatments can help both prevent and manage thrips infestations effectively. Farmers are strongly advised to conduct regular field inspections and take preventive actions as soon as signs of thrips are detected to minimize crop losses.
