To keep racing pigeons, it's essential to raise them in a responsible and civilized manner. Before starting, make sure your setup doesn't disrupt the city's appearance and that you maintain good relations with your neighbors. Choose a pigeon loft that faces east-west for optimal sunlight and ventilation. Pigeons are monogamous, so if you only have hens without cocks, they won’t lay eggs. Therefore, it’s important to distinguish between males and females. Hens are generally smaller, with a rounded head, a narrow beak, and softer features. Roosters, on the other hand, have larger, thicker beaks and harder neck bones. During mating season, roosters display distinct behaviors—such as bowing, standing tall, fluffing their feathers, and spreading their tail feathers in low sweeps. They also walk back and forth while making a double sound, with the second note longer.
When pairing pigeons, use nesting boxes of appropriate sizes: 40 cm long, 30 cm wide, and 25 cm high. The first egg is usually laid between 9 am and 5 pm, and the hen will sit on it for about 16 hours. After 18 days, two chicks will hatch. For the first month, the parents feed them crop milk and soft food. By the time they’re one month old, they can find food on their own and start flying. Once the adult pigeons reach six months of age, they begin seeking mates and reproducing.
If you don’t collect the eggs, a pair can lay up to four clutches in a single month. However, if you hatch the eggs and raise the young, each pair can grow to around 20 pigeons per year.
Racing pigeons require simple and nutritious food, such as wheat, corn, and rice. You can also feed them commercial pellets containing rapeseed, peanuts, peas, and green beans. A balanced diet ensures they stay healthy and perform well during races. With proper care, attention to breeding habits, and a suitable environment, you can successfully raise a strong and competitive flock of racing pigeons.
