Experts emphasize that regular, moderate physical activity can significantly lower the risk of heart and brain-related diseases. According to Zhang Jian, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences’ Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, being overweight is one of the key risk factors for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions in China. He highlighted that increasing physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight have become essential strategies in reducing the rising prevalence of these diseases. Over the past two decades, the incidence of cardiovascular disease has steadily increased. In the 1980s, infectious diseases were more common, with rheumatic heart disease affecting over 48% of cases. However, after 2000, the pattern shifted, with coronary artery disease and hypertension becoming the main causes. Today, rheumatic heart disease accounts for only about 8.7% of cases, indicating a strong link between lifestyle changes and current cardiovascular trends. A major factor contributing to this shift is the decline in physical activity, which increases the risk of such diseases. Zhang recommends daily exercise, maintaining good physical health, and keeping weight within a healthy range.

Ma Xin, chief physician at the Department of Neurology at Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, added that while insufficient exercise raises the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, excessive exercise can also be harmful. She introduced the “1357” exercise guideline: “1” means exercising once a day, “3” refers to at least 30 minutes per session, “5” indicates five times a week, and “7” suggests that during exercise, your heart rate should be around 170 minus your age. Additionally, Ma emphasized the importance of outdoor activities for better health outcomes. These expert recommendations underline the need for balanced, consistent physical activity as a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle. ——Midi Medical Network
