Experts emphasize that regular, moderate exercise plays a key role in lowering the risk of heart and brain-related diseases. According to Zhang Jian, a professor at the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases under the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, being overweight is a major risk factor for such conditions in China. He noted that increasing physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight have become essential strategies in reducing the prevalence of these illnesses. Over the past two decades, the incidence of cardiovascular disease has steadily increased. In the 1980s, infectious diseases were more common, with rheumatic heart disease affecting over 48% of the population. However, after 2000, the leading causes shifted toward coronary heart disease and hypertension, with rheumatic heart disease now accounting for only 8.7%. This change highlights how lifestyle factors, especially reduced physical activity, contribute significantly to the rising rates of cardiovascular disease. Zhang Jian recommends daily exercise, maintaining good physical health, and keeping weight within a healthy range.
Ma Xin, a senior physician from the Department of Neurology at Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, added that both insufficient and excessive exercise can be harmful. She introduced the "1357" exercise principle: exercise once a day, for at least 30 minutes each session, five times per week, and keep your heart rate during activity around 170 minus your age. She also advised that outdoor activities are preferable for better overall health. These guidelines aim to help individuals maintain a balanced and safe approach to physical activity, ultimately improving long-term cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health. ——Midi Medical Network
