High quality fingerling discriminating method

Fish farming success depends heavily on the quality of the fish stock. When selecting fish for a pond, it's essential to ensure that they are uniform in size, shape, and growth rate. A well-managed pond should have fish of the same species that are neatly aligned in terms of body length and weight. If there is a noticeable variation in size or if the fish appear mixed or low-quality, this could lead to poor survival rates. This often happens due to factors like competition for food, genetic mixing, or improper rearing conditions. The color of the fish is another important indicator of quality. Healthy fish should have a bright, shiny appearance. Different species have different natural colors depending on their diet and environment. For example, high-quality carp typically has a silver-gray back, silvery sides, and a white belly. Grass carp should have a light golden yellow body with distinct dark reticulated patterns, and the more robust the fish, the more vibrant this color becomes. High-quality tilapia usually has a pale golden hue with minimal black markings. If the fish appears dull, dark, or even black, it may be a sign of weak fry or sick fish. The luster of the fish’s skin is also a key factor. Fish naturally have a mucus layer that protects them from infections and parasites. This mucus contains enzymes like proteases and lysozymes, which help maintain the health of the scales and skin. Fish that are healthy will have a smooth, glossy surface. However, sick or weak fish often lack this mucus, making their skin look dry and lifeless. In some cases, when fish are under stress—such as from parasites like small melon worms—they may produce excess mucus as a defense mechanism, which can make their skin appear slimy and lose its natural shine. Observing the behavior of the fish is equally important. Healthy fingerlings are active, alert, and tend to gather in groups. When startled, they quickly dive to the bottom of the water. They show strong feeding responses and good swimming ability. In contrast, weak or diseased fish tend to move slowly, avoid others, and show little interest in food. Their swimming is uncoordinated, and they may float near the surface or lie motionless at the bottom. Finally, a random inspection of the fish can provide further insight into their quality. High-quality fish will exhibit strong vitality when removed from the water. They should be plump, with a small head, thick back, smooth body color, moist muscles, and intact scales and fins. The tail should be straight, without any bends, and the body should be free from parasites, injuries, or deformities. On the other hand, weak or sick fish will show poor movement, have damaged or missing scales and fins, appear thin and elongated, and may even display signs like "no belly" or "sticking to the net," indicating poor health and low viability.
