EU introduces new regulations for food packaging

The EU Council of Ministers unanimously adopted the new regulations for the labeling of food and beverages. The new regulations will take effect from November 2011. China's food exporting enterprises should take effective countermeasures as soon as possible to ensure the quality and safety of exported foods.

According to the new EU regulations, all food and beverage packaging must clearly identify fat, sugar, salt, carbohydrate and calorie content; it is forbidden to refer to artificial foods such as "artificial cheese" or "cheese" for short; it is required for substances that may cause allergic reactions. Special emphasis has been placed on warnings for pregnant women and children concerning caffeine-containing foods such as energy drinks; all fresh meat products must be marked with a label of origin, but only fresh beef had to be marked with a label of origin.

The new regulations will come into effect in November 2011. However, to facilitate industrial enterprises to make corresponding adjustments, the above provisions will be enforced starting in 2014. The provisions on calorie content will be enforced from 2016 onwards.
