Chicken manure is a cost-effective and nutritious protein source that can be used as a supplement in animal feed. It contains approximately 15% to 30% crude protein, 2.4% crude fat, 10% to 16% crude fiber, 30% nitrogen-free extract, 5.6% calcium, 1% linoleic acid, and various essential amino acids. One kilogram of dry chicken manure provides the equivalent protein content of about 600 grams of concentrate feed, making it a valuable resource for livestock and poultry farmers.
There are several methods to process chicken manure before using it in animal diets:
1. **Drying**: Fresh chicken manure is spread on a clean concrete surface and allowed to air-dry naturally. Once dried, it is crushed into a fine powder and ready for use.
2. **Fermentation**: Chicken manure is mixed with rice bran, wheat bran, and grass powder, along with an appropriate amount of water. The mixture is then placed in a container, pit, or sealed plastic bag, pressed tightly, and left to ferment for 3 to 5 days. After fermentation, it becomes more digestible and can be used as feed.
3. **Silage**: This method involves mixing 60% chicken manure, 30% straw powder, and 10% bran. The mixture is kept at around 60% moisture and stored for 30 to 50 days. Once ready, it can be used as silage for feeding animals.
4. **Chemical Treatment**: Semi-dried chicken manure is treated with 0.5% to 1% sulfuric acid or 0.5% formaldehyde solution. After treatment, it is air-dried and crushed for safe use.
When incorporating chicken manure into animal diets, the recommended amounts vary by species: 5% to 10% for piglets, 15% to 30% for finishing pigs, 20% to 35% for sheep, 40% for beef cattle, 10% to 30% for dairy cows, 5% for chickens, and 10% to 15% for laying hens. It's important to use fresh, uncontaminated chicken manure and avoid adding extra calcium sources. Additionally, chicken manure should not be fed to laying hens or other animals within 15 days of slaughter to ensure food safety. Always combine it with adequate grain feed to balance the diet effectively.
