To promote tomato color change

Many vegetable farmers have been increasing greenhouse temperatures excessively in an attempt to speed up the color change in tomatoes. However, I strongly disagree with this practice. First of all, high temperatures can actually hinder the production of lycopene, which is essential for tomato color development. When the temperature reaches around 24°C, lycopene starts to accumulate effectively. However, as the temperature rises beyond that, the accumulation of lycopene is significantly reduced. At temperatures above 35°C, lycopene production is completely blocked. Therefore, it's best to maintain a temperature between 24°C and 28°C during the coloring stage to ensure optimal color development. Secondly, excessive heat can lead to problems such as heat stress and sunscald on the fruit. Especially after the outside temperature rises above 20°C, if the greenhouse temperature is increased without proper control, it can create a high-temperature barrier, causing the tomatoes to get sunburned. This not only affects the appearance but also reduces the quality and market value of the crop. Thirdly, potassium plays a crucial role in the color transformation of tomatoes. Simply relying on environmental factors like temperature isn't enough. Farmers should also ensure adequate potassium supply. A recommended practice is to apply 20 kg of high-potassium compound fertilizer per acre, mixed with water. In addition, deficiencies in certain micronutrients, such as boron, can also result in poor coloration, like the formation of green or blue patches on the skin. To address this, it’s advisable to spray foliar fertilizers containing elements like boron, zinc, and iron during the color change period. These nutrients help improve the overall color and quality of the tomatoes. By maintaining proper temperature levels, ensuring sufficient potassium, and addressing micronutrient deficiencies, farmers can achieve better results in tomato coloration without resorting to harmful high-temperature practices.
