On January 11, 2008, the 2007 National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held at the Great Hall of the People. This prestigious event recognized outstanding achievements in China’s scientific and technological fields, with a total of 350 individuals receiving awards. These included 39 National Natural Science Awards, 51 National Technology Invention Awards, and 254 National Science and Technology Progress Awards.
Among the most distinguished awardees were two academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering: Yan Enze, a renowned petrochemical catalyst expert, and Wu Zhengyu, a botanist. Their groundbreaking contributions highlighted the significance of scientific research in driving national progress.
Shanghai emerged as a major winner at the conference, securing a total of 54 awards—comprising 9 National Natural Science Awards, 4 National Technology Invention Awards, 39 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 2 China Science and Technology Cooperation Awards. This accounted for 15.4% of the national total, showcasing Shanghai’s strong scientific foundation. Notably, some of the youngest recipients were only 37 years old, reflecting the city's vibrant innovation ecosystem.
The award-winning projects also addressed key issues affecting daily life in Shanghai. From advanced fabrics that absorb sweat and UV rays to breakthroughs in rice genetics, these innovations touched on clothing, food, transportation, and healthcare. The “Donghai Bridge†technology, which enabled the construction of a super-long sea bridge, and new treatments for liver cancer were among the highlights.
According to Yin Bangqi, director of the Science and Technology Award Center of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, science and technology should serve the public. He emphasized that many of the projects were initiated with a people-centered approach, ensuring they had real-world impact.
One of the standout projects was the development of high-conductivity wet polyester fiber by Donghua University. This fabric mimics human skin, effectively absorbing and expelling sweat, offering comfort even in hot weather.
Another significant achievement was the sequencing of rice chromosome 4 by the Shanghai Academy of Sciences. This genetic map, covering 35.48 million base pairs with 99.99% accuracy, was one of the first two rice chromosomes to be fully sequenced. It has since paved the way for improved rice varieties with enhanced yield, quality, and resilience.
The “Donghai Bridge†project, which earned the top National Science and Technology Progress Award, introduced seven key technologies for building bridges in harsh marine environments. Its success has been applied to other major infrastructure projects, establishing it as a cornerstone of modern bridge engineering.
In the medical field, a drug developed by Professor Guo Yajun at the Shanghai Second Military Medical University won the National Technology Invention Award. This antibody fusion protein drug acts like a “bio-missile,†targeting rheumatoid arthritis with high efficacy and minimal side effects. Known as “Yisep,†it is the only anti-rheumatic drug capable of preventing bone and joint deformity.
Additionally, the Ninth People’s Hospital in Shanghai received recognition for its work in facial reconstruction after oral and maxillofacial tumor surgery. This advancement has significantly improved the quality of life for patients who have undergone such procedures.
These achievements underscore Shanghai’s growing influence in science and technology, proving that innovation can directly benefit society.
