Application of Micro-CT of Small Animals in the Study of Tooth Morphology

Objective: This study is to study the structure of the teeth, the crown, the root and the root canal structure to understand the structure of the teeth, and to lay the artificial denture model, implant artificial denture and establish the biomechanical analysis of the teeth. An important foundation.
Experimental method: This experiment was carried out on the small animal Micro-CT public experimental platform of Guangzhou Zhongke Yusheng Company. Reconstruction and segmentation of the raw data obtained from the scan, as well as measurements of other dental parameters.
Experimental results: The image quality obtained by Micro-ct is much better in fineness than human CT, and the crown, root and root canal can be accurately segmented by computer to obtain its structure.
Below, I will briefly introduce the experimental content and results.
At present, there are still relatively few public CT CT experimental platforms available in China. This dog pre-experiment uses a domestic small animal Micro-CT. I am satisfied with the pre-experiment results, the equipment performance can fully meet the demand, and the service is also very good, with a professional bioengineer to assist in the experiment. I share some of the experimental data pictures with peer researchers or relevant study researchers, hoping to help you in related fields. The scanning parameters of this experiment are voltage 60Kvp, power 50W, 1 frame superposition, and field of view 2 cm × 2 cm. The experimental material was selected, and one canine tooth sample was scanned and fixed. After scanning, the original data will be reconstructed in three dimensions to obtain a three-dimensional model of the tooth and two-dimensional arbitrary cross-section, coronal section and sagittal section.
Three-dimensional structure of the tooth:
Figure 1 Through the three-dimensional map of the teeth, we can clearly see the surface structure of the teeth. In Figure 2, by setting the parameters, the internal and external overall structure of the teeth can be clearly observed. Figures 3 and 4, the three-dimensional cut-away view allows us to more intuitively observe the internal structure of the tooth and the shape of the root canal. Figure 5 is a software automatic and accurate image segmentation technology, filling and separating the root canal to obtain a three-dimensional model structure of the root canal. It provides a model basis for later root canal research. Fig. 6 shows the model structure by separating the enamel by the principle of the difference in enamel and dentin density. This structure provides the basis for future artificial tooth model design.
Two-dimensional plan
Figures 7 to 9 are two-dimensional sagittal section, coronal section and transverse section of the tooth, respectively. Each of the sections has a cut-off map of the original gray value, a threshold cut color map and a pseudo color cut chart. From the cutaway view, we clearly distinguish the areas of enamel, dentin and root canal.
Dental structure measurement:
Figure 10 is a measurement of enamel thickness, Figure 10 is a measurement of dentin thickness, and Figure 12 is a measurement of root length. These measurement parameters are the basic parameters for studying the morphology of teeth and are the basis for later study of teeth. Figures 13 through 15 are measurements of tooth width, thickness and length, respectively. Figure 16 and Figure 17 are three-dimensional measurement of crown space

In summary, we can get a conclusion that micro-ct plays a very important role in the study of tooth morphology and provides a new research method for modern dental science research. I believe that micro-ct will be more and more widely used in dental clinical treatment and related academic research.
