Production practice has shown that combining biogas residue with cottonseed husks for mushroom cultivation offers several advantages over using cottonseed husks alone. First, it significantly reduces the amount of cottonseed hulls needed, cutting the cost of mushroom farming by up to 30%. Second, it boosts mushroom yield—each 100 kilograms of the mixed substrate can produce 80 to 100 kilograms of mushrooms, which is about 20% higher than traditional methods. Third, the mycelium grows faster, leading to earlier fruiting and a shorter cultivation cycle. Fourth, the resulting mushrooms are more nutritious, have better color, a superior taste, and are more resistant to damage during storage and transport. Lastly, the leftover mushroom residue can be used as an excellent organic fertilizer for farmland.
The method of preparing the culture material involves first removing and filtering the matured biogas residue until it holds water without dripping when squeezed. The new cottonseed husks are then sterilized and soaked in water. For every 60 kg of biogas residue, 140 kg of cottonseed husks are added, along with 1% gypsum powder, 1% urea, and 0.5% superphosphate. All ingredients are thoroughly mixed, then pressed into blocks that are 12 cm thick and ready for inoculation.
Before inoculation, it's important to select disease-free and healthy mycelium strains. After the substrate is compacted, small holes are dug in a plum blossom pattern every 6 cm, with a depth of 3 to 4 cm. Each hole is filled with the mycelium, then covered with a mixture of biogas residue and fine sand (half of each), and pressed tightly. The surface is then covered with plastic film and kept moist and warm. Daily management follows the same procedures as those used for pure cottonseed husk substrates.
This technique not only improves efficiency but also promotes sustainable agriculture by recycling agricultural waste into valuable resources. It’s a practical and eco-friendly approach that farmers can easily adopt to enhance their mushroom production while reducing environmental impact.
