Tower Semiconductor, an Israeli semiconductor foundry, has announced a strategic collaboration with CMT Medical Technologies, a leading provider of medical X-ray imaging systems. Together, the two companies are working on developing advanced medical X-ray detectors that will be used in a variety of diagnostic applications, including X-ray radiography, cardiovascular imaging, and mammography. These large-area detectors are typically manufactured on 8-inch wafers and require high production yields to meet industry demands.
The first flat-panel X-ray detectors are expected to enter the market in 2009. According to both companies, the new detectors utilize CMOS image sensor technology, which offers significant improvements over traditional methods. This innovation is expected to enhance image quality, reduce costs, and improve overall performance in medical imaging systems.
Avi Strum, General Manager of CMOS Image Sensors and Non-Volatile Memory at Tower Semiconductor, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, "This collaboration presents a great opportunity for Tower to translate its technological innovations into real-world product strategies." Russell Ellwanger, CEO of CMT Medical Technologies, added that by combining CMT’s deep market expertise with Tower’s advanced wafer fabrication capabilities, the two companies aim to capture a substantial share of the $500 million medical X-ray detector market by 2010.
This partnership not only strengthens both companies’ positions in the medical imaging sector but also reflects a growing trend toward cross-industry collaboration to drive innovation and meet the evolving needs of healthcare providers worldwide.
