pansy

In early spring, the pansy in the courtyard was blooming despite the cold weather, and it continued to flower all the way until late May. This long flowering period makes it one of the most impressive among grass flowers. Native to Europe, the pansy is now widely cultivated across China. Belonging to the Amaranthaceae family, it is an annual herb that thrives in cool climates and moist, well-drained soil. It has a self-replicating nature, making it easy to grow. The pansy plant typically grows between 20 to 30 centimeters tall and is multi-branched. Its basal leaves are long-stalked, while its flowers are large, symmetrical, and resemble butterflies, which is why it's also called "butterfly." The flowers usually come in three colors—blue, yellow, and white—hence the name "pansy." However, there are also varieties with blended colors like red and purple, resembling colorful children’s toys, which is why some kids call it "Ghost Face." Despite this playful nickname, there are rare and highly valued types of pansies with solid colors, two-tone patterns, large blossoms, wavy edges, or petals with halos and intricate markings. These are considered more refined or "thoroughbred" varieties. The fruit of the pansy is a small pod, oval-shaped and three-lobed. Once mature, the pod opens naturally. When the capsule droops and the skin turns yellow, it's time to harvest the seeds. Pansies reproduce through seeds, and germination usually occurs within ten days after sowing. Pansies have been cultivated in Chinese gardens for a long time and are also popular as indoor plants. They can bloom even in December when grown in pots. Beyond their ornamental value, the entire plant has medicinal uses. The stems and leaves contain pansy pigments, while the flowers are rich in compounds such as pansyin, scented glycosides, essential oils, and vitamins A and C. These properties make them useful as expectorants and help treat conditions like infantile spasms.
