The National Institute for Vegetable and Tea Research (NIVTS) is seeking an industrial partner for the development of an insect growth regulator (IGR). The researchers have isolated a gene that affects the metamorphosis of larvae to adults. This work can lead to the development of Effective control of Lepidoptera pest IGR. This gene produces an enzyme, JHAMT, which affects the production of juvenile hormones. Substances that inhibit this gene can interfere with the development of larvae and reduce adult spawning. NIVTS people have isolated similar genes from Spodoptera litura, cotton bollworm, fruit flies, and mosquitoes. After the gene was isolated, the researchers planned to begin screening for JHAMT inhibitors together with Japanese universities. NIVTS has applied for a patent for this gene.
