New discovery of vegetable grain resistance

Potato X virus includes more than 40 kinds of viruses, mainly harming potatoes and so on. Researchers at the University of Tokyo in Japan recently discovered that a protein can protect potatoes from infection with such viruses. This discovery will help develop more resistant grain and vegetable varieties.

Potato Virus X viruses cause systemic mosaic and ring spot symptoms in many monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. This phenomenon occurs in all parts of the world. It mainly harms potatoes and can also infect tomatoes, tobacco and orchids.

This protein is a kind of lectin. Plant lectins were first found in ramie plants, but the effect of lectins on plants has not been known.

A team at the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo found that the lectin was produced by the "JAX1" gene, so they implanted the gene into tobaccos that are resistant to the virus X of the potato virus, and then infected the virus with these viruses. After 20 days, these tobaccos were completely free of viruses, whereas in the tobacco control group, the viruses spread on their stems and leaves. Researchers believe that the "JAX1" gene encodes a synthetic plant lectin that protects tobacco from virus infection. They also confirmed that tobacco transplanted with this gene is very resistant to at least four viruses.

Researchers said that in the future, if the "JAX1" gene is introduced into potatoes, tomatoes, etc. by means of hybridization, etc., new strains with strong resistance to these viruses can be cultivated.
