Ministry of Health: Pilot organ donation will be expanded this year

Huang Jiefu, deputy director of the Ministry of Health, revealed yesterday that the organ donation pilot will be fully rolled out this year in hospitals with qualified organ transplants. At present, the Ministry of Health has announced 163 hospitals with human organ transplant qualifications, covering 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities).

As of last year, 163 cases of organ donation

According to statistics, at present, 1.5 million patients in China each year need to save their lives through organ transplantation. However, the number of transplantable organs is less than 1% every year.

It is widely believed in the industry that there is no organ transplant without organ donation, and the supply of organs is scarce. The main reason is that the organ donation rate is extremely low. In March 2010, the Chinese Red Cross and the Ministry of Health jointly launched a pilot project for donating human organs throughout the country. The pilot work in 2011 was expanded to 16 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities).

According to relevant sources of the Ministry of Health, as of the end of December 2011, 16 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) including Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangdong had started pilot work on human organ donation, and 163 donations were made.

The "People's Daily" reported that the number of "organ donors after the death of a citizen" in China was zero in 2003. After years of hard work, the donation rate per million people in China reached 0.03.

Some organ donors died as a result of a traffic accident. The donor’s family was not wealthy and the family could not afford the medical expenses owed.

Regarding the possibility of humanitarian assistance to the donors, Huang Jiefu said that the aid to the donors will introduce a unified policy, but they will not engage in a "one size fits all" provision for a unified amount.

6 hospitals have been suspended from their qualifications for transplantation

According to relevant sources from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Health has now completed flight inspections in 18 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities). It has successively imposed penalties for suspending the transfer of six months or one year for six transplant hospitals with serious violations. However, the above-mentioned sources did not disclose the list of penalized hospitals and the reasons for the punishment.
