Inappropriate grit feeding affects chicken absorption

Chickens have no teeth and can't chew food. Grit plays a role in grinding the feed in the chicken's stomach. Feeding chickens with gravel helps the digestion and absorption of chickens and improves feed utilization. However, if the grit size and amount are not properly selected, it will affect the digestion and absorption of chickens.

The grain size of gravel is usually within 2 weeks of age. The grain size of gravel is preferably small grain size. Later, as the chicken age increases, it can be changed to sorghum grain size, and the feeding amount should be increased from small to large. The grain size of young chickens and adult chickens is generally suitable for the size of soybeans.

The texture of the gravel to feed the chicken gravel is generally better than the hard insoluble sand, such as sand, broken bricks, hard soil and so on.

Feeding methods Caged chickens may be provided with gravel tanks or mixed with feed in the cage. The free-range chickens are best to sprinkle the gravel in the chicken farm for chickens to feed freely.

Because of the different feeding methods, the feeding amount of gravel is also not consistent. In general, young hens that are caged are suitable for feeding 200-250 g of gravel per week, and it is advisable for free-range laying hens to feed 420-460 g of gravel per 100 birds per week.
