The authentic Taihu Crab is almost in short supply, which has led to the rapid development of crab farming in Taihu Lake in recent years. However, the serious shortage of high-quality crabs of the Chinese mitten crab in the Yangtze River water system has become a “bottleneck” that restricts the further development of the crab breeding industry. Many crab traffickers resorted to unscrupulous methods to use fraudulent techniques to infuse poor quality crab species in the Yangtze River water system into the high-quality crab species of the Yangtze River and deceive the farmers, causing the farmers to suffer major economic losses. In order to maintain the healthy and rapid development of Taihu Crab, maintain the advantages of traditional brands, and improve the quality and market competitiveness of Taihu Crab, Wuzhong District Fisheries Department undertook three projects of Jiangsu Province's agricultural reconstruction in 2001; Selection and promotion of crab species.
The project adopts the crab species cultivated by the natural crabs of the Yangtze River, develops adult crabs in the enclosure area of ​​the East Taihu Lake, and screens the developed crabs to screen out the crab-forming parents with distinct traits in the Yangtze River water system. Using the techniques and equipment of the Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Freshwater Fisheries, in its crab breeding base, advanced molecular biology techniques are applied to develop breeding and breeding of high-quality crabs of the Chinese mitten crab in the Yangtze River water system; Pond ecological environment, reasonable collocation of animal feed and plant feed, control of feeding amount and water quality, adoption of scientific prevention and other technical measures, and the integration and updating of high-quality crab cultivation techniques.
After three years of efforts, significant achievements have been made in the selection and promotion of Chinese mitten crab species in the Yangtze River water system. According to statistics, in 2003, Wuzhong District produced more than 2,000 kilograms of high-quality crab seedlings. In the Yangtze River water system, the area of ​​high-quality crabs cultivated in the Yangtze River water system exceeded 6,000 mu. This year, 27.5 million high-quality crab species in the Yangtze River water system were produced as Taihu Crabs. The breeding of crabs reared on the net has laid a good foundation for breeding, thus solving the problems of impure crabs, low survival rate, serious diseases, and small size of commodity crabs, which seriously plague the development of crab farming in the district. The famous Taihu Crab was developed in the direction of large-scale production and industrialization.
