Champagne wine is expected to rise in price

The price of grapes in the Champagne region has increased and it is expected that the price of champagne wine will rise next year.

Although supermarkets are currently selling champagne at a discount in order to compete for market share, the increase in grape prices in 2011 will inevitably lead to higher champagne prices.

Shortly after the harvest was completed, the price of grapes was expected to increase by at least 3%, and some of the premium estates even reached 4.5%.

Carol Duval-Leroy, owner of the Duval-Leroy estate, said that the rise in grape prices was "collective suicide." “The increase in grape costs in recent years means that retail prices in London will increase by 3-6%, and consumers may choose Prosecco (Italian sparkling white wine). David Hesketh, general manager and wine master of Laurent-Perrier UK, said: "Since last year's market conditions, we have assumed our own cost increase. This year we will transfer the rising costs, otherwise we will not be able to survive."

Most British retailers will transfer rising costs to consumers. A Tesco supermarket spokesperson said, “This situation is similar to last year. The increase in costs will also have to take into account the potential 7.5% tax increase, and the retail price pressure is even greater.”
