Ping Peng Cao Jinlian Ping Penglian

Scientific name: Nuphar pumilum

Common names: Huang Jinlian, Ping Penglian

Family and genus: Nymphaeaceae, a flowering plant family.

This genus includes approximately 25 species worldwide, with around 45 species found in China.

Plant form:

Nuphar is a perennial aquatic herb that floats on the water surface. It has a thick, sprawling rhizome. The leaves are floating, leathery or papery, round to oval in shape, measuring 8 to 17 cm in length. They have a deep heart-shaped base and entire margins. The upper surface of the leaves is glossy green, while the underside has soft hairs and a spine. The veins are fine and branch multiple times. The petioles are cylindrical, and the submerged leaves are thin and soft.

Flowers are solitary, borne on long, cylindrical stalks above the water. The buds are spherical and green. There are five obovate sepals that resemble petals, yellow in color. Petals number between 10 to 20, narrow and wedge-shaped. Sterile stamens are present and fall off, while fertile stamens are located at the base of the ovary. There are 12 to 15 carpels that form an upper ovary, each with a distinct stigma, giving the pistil a radial disk appearance. The ovary contains as many carpels as there are stigmas, and most develop on the diaphragm. The fruit is an ovate berry, about 3 cm long, with persistent bracts and irregular dehiscence. Seeds are round, yellow-brown, and shiny. Flowering occurs from May to July, and fruiting takes place from July to September.

Guizhou Ping Peng grass is nearly round or oval, with a small plant size. The species O. chinensis has larger flowers, with a diameter of 5-6 cm, and the flower stalks rise about 20 cm above the water. It has high ornamental value.

Eurasian Ping Peng grass has thick, leathery, oval leaves.

Taiwan flatbill has oblong or oval leaves.

Origin:

Nuphar pumilum is distributed across provinces such as Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Xinjiang in China. It also grows in Japan, Russia, Siberia, and parts of Europe.

Guizhou Ping Peng grass is mainly found in Guizhou Province.

Chinese phlebodus grass is distributed in Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, and Zhejiang.

Eurasian grasses are found in Xinjiang, Guizhou, and Europe.

Taiwan Ping Peng grass is native to Taiwan Province.

Growing habits:

Nuphar prefers warm, moist, and sunny environments. It can grow in a variety of soils, though slightly sticky and fertile soil is preferred. It thrives in water depths ranging from 30 to 60 cm, with a maximum depth of up to 1 meter. The ideal growth temperature is between 15°C and 32°C, and growth ceases when temperatures drop below 12°C.

It is cold-tolerant and does not require winter protection in areas south of the Yangtze River. In northern regions, it should be protected during winter, with dormancy temperatures maintained between 0°C and 5°C.

Reproduction methods:

Nuphar primarily reproduces through vegetative propagation, with sexual reproduction via seeds being less common. Sexual reproduction involves seed germination, which can occur alongside other water lilies.

Uses:

Nuphar pumilum is a popular ornamental plant used for pond landscaping. It is often planted alongside water lilies, lotus, reeds, cattails, and yellow iris to create vibrant aquatic scenes. It can also be planted near homes, buildings, rockeries, or in sunny garden spots. Its roots help purify water. In early years, the seeds were once used for making glutinous rice.

The rhizomes are used in traditional medicine to strengthen the spleen and stomach, stop bleeding, and treat neurasthenia.
