How to manage melon grafted seedlings

The survival rate of grafted seedlings depends on the quality of management after grafting. It generally takes 10 to 12 days from grafting to survive. During this period, the main links of heat preservation, moisturizing, and shading should be well grasped.

How to manage melon grafted seedlings?

1. Insulation:

The suitable temperature for grafted seedlings healing is 25°C~30°C during the day and 18°C~20°C at night. Over 40°C or below 10°C will affect the survival rate. Sunny days cover high temperatures and cover heat at night. After 5 to 7 days, daytime temperatures are maintained at 30°C to 32°C, nighttime temperatures are above 15°C, and ground temperature is 20°C. After 7 to 12 days, 28°C to 30°C during the day, 13°C at night, and 18°C.

2. Moisturizing:

Minimizing the water evaporation from the scion is the key to improving the graft survival rate. The air humidity in the seedbed is small, and the scions are prone to dehydration and wilting, and severely affect survival. In order to ensure the humidity, the seedbed should be irrigated when planting, and the small arch shed on the seedbed should be sealed tightly so that the humidity within the shed can be saturated for 3 to 7 days to maintain the humidity from 85% to 90%, and after 8 days, it can be maintained at 80% to 85%. About 10 days later, the grafted seedlings grow new leaves to survive.

3. Blackout:

Within 3 days after grafting, the roof is covered with a cover to shade it from direct sunlight, and a small amount of scattered light may be irradiated. If all shading, yellow seedlings will appear yellow phenomenon, affecting the survival rate 3 days after the early and late can be removed to cover the negative, after the seedlings gradually increased transparency, extended light transmission time, no longer shading 7 days later.

4. Ventilation:

Within 3 days after grafting, the membranes can be opened for 1 or 2 air changes every day. After 5 days, the new leaves of grafted seedlings begin to grow. Ventilation volume should be gradually increased, the ventilation openings should be small to large, and the ventilation time should be short to long.

5. Remove rootstock sprouts:

After the growing point of the rootstock was removed, lateral buds still germinated one after another. These lateral buds grew rapidly and often competed with the scion for nutrients, affecting the survival of the grafted seedlings and removing them in time. At the same time, the operation should be light so as not to damage the cotyledons and loosen the scion.

6. Broken root:

After 10 to 12 days after grafting, the sub-hypocotyls of the scion can be cut from 0.5 to 1 cm below the interface, and both the upper and lower blades cut off the hypocotyls of the scion. When the roots are cut off, 2 or 3 strains can be tested first. If wilting does not occur, the root can be completely removed the next day. After the root break, in case of high temperatures in sunny weather, shade and water spray should be properly applied.

7. Withdraw the folder:

When the grafted seedlings passed the slow seedling stage, the scions grew new leaves, which proved that the grafted seedlings had survived. After 10 days, grafting clips should be promptly removed. If the interface does not grow well, the grafting clips can be gradually removed after colonization. In order to avoid affecting the growth and development of grafted seedlings.
