Zinc deficiency in rice can lead to various morphological symptoms, most commonly known as "red seedling disease" or "fire burning seedlings." This results in malformed leaves that unfold at the front but fold inward at the middle and back, creating a distinct, irregular shape. In severe cases, if the symptoms persist until maturity, the plants become extremely stunted, dark in color, and resemble short, narrow bamboo-like leaves. The leaf sheaths grow longer than the leaves themselves, and jointing becomes difficult.
