Foldable organic batteries are available for use in implantable devices such as pacemakers

Release date: 2017-09-18

According to British media reports on September 13, scientists at Queen's University of Belfast have developed a new flexible organic battery that can replace the rigid battery of medical implant devices (such as pacemakers), which is a breakthrough.

Devices such as pacemakers currently use rigid metal batteries that may cause discomfort to the patient. Organic batteries can reach three times the power of conventional batteries, and because they are decomposable, organic batteries are also expected to have environmental benefits.

Dr. Geetha Srinivasan, director of the IBIL Research Center at Queen's University in Belfast, said the battery is non-flammable and has no leakage problems. She said the "flexible supercapacitor" can be used to power body sensors such as pacemakers.

The doctor also said: "In medical devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators, there are two implants, one in the heart and the other in a metal-based rigid battery. The implant is implanted. Under the skin, the implant under the skin is attached to the device and can cause discomfort to the patient because it can rub against the skin. Therefore, the battery needs to be fused with the human body. Ideally, we want them to be flexible. To adapt to body shape."

On the other hand, Dr. Geetha Srinivasan said that the new battery will be safer than existing batteries. Because it does not contain flammable solvents, there is no danger of explosion. The technology may also be used in future mobile phones or laptops, but its design is currently limited by rigid batteries.

Current batteries contain toxic materials that are difficult to recycle. However, organic batteries can decompose over time. The new equipment will be made using "natural materials" (biomaterials such as cellulose) rather than expensive metals or semiconductors. However, the organic battery does not decompose in the human body, and it only begins to decompose at a high temperature of 270 ° C or higher. As long as the funds are in place, the new battery is likely to be commercialized and can power mobile phones or similar devices in the next five years.
